El Departamento de Salud de Florida (FDOH por sus siglas en inglés) confirmó un caso de Naegleria fowleri, una ameba que come el cerebro, en el condado de Hillsborough.

Según la FDOH, la ameba puede causar una infección rara del cerebro llamada meningoencefalitis amebiana primaria (PAM) que destruye el tejido cerebral y por lo general es mortal. Es común encontrar la ameba en agua dulce como los lagos, ríos, estanques y canales.

Las infecciones pueden ocurrir cuando el agua contaminada entra por la nariz de alguien.
